Edgehill Neighborhood Coalition - A PLACE WE CAN ALL CALL HOME!

In September of 2015, residents of Edgehill met to discuss concerns about rapid changes in the community and to begin the process of a collective vision for the Edgehill neighborhood. This meeting resulted in the formation of a coalition comprised of representatives from the following organizations:

• Acts 29 Church of Edgehill

• Edgehill Residents' Association

• Edgehill Family Resource Center

• Edgehill Neighborhood Partnership

• Edgehill United Methodist

• Edgehill Village Neighborhood Association

• Gernert Studios Residents Association

• New Hope Baptist Church

• Organized Neighbors of Edgehill

• Salama Urban Ministries

• Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church

This group realized that in order for residents to have a strong voice in the how their neighborhood developed, the diverse groups within the neighborhood needed to come together to develop a common vision and action plan. The Edgehill Coalition is a united neighborhood coalition that hopes to address short term concerns, such as developers encroaching on resident’s property, as well as longer term displacement & development issues. The coalition came up with four common goals:

1.For Edgehill to be maintained as a distinct neighborhood with specific boundaries and a unique character and history. Edgehill should not be absorbed into Midtown, the Gulch, or 12South.

2.Organizing residents from all corners of the neighborhood to shape the future of Edgehill around our common interests. This includes an emphasis on and care for both private and public housing.

3.The creation of mixed-income housing so people of all income levels can be residents.

4.A walkable neighborhood with basic services for people who live here, not just for those coming in from outside the area.

Currently, the coalition has organized efforts into four “working groups” focused on the following action items:

  • Communicating with MDHA about the future redevelopment of Edgehill Apartments
  • Creating Neighborhood signage to help informally mark Edgehill as a distinct neighborhood
  • Shaping the “narrative of Edgehill” by collecting written/oral histories
  • Policy work to help “officially” define Edgehill as a distinct neighborhood
